Does My Whippet Shed? And What You Can Do About It
Sighthounds
are known for their smooth, short coats—but yes, they do shed! While it's not as dramatic as long-haired breeds, you’ll still find those fine hairs clinging to furniture, clothes, or your lap. The good news? There are simple ways to manage it, while also creating a clean and comfy life for your pup.
1.Accept That It’s Normal
Just like trees shedding leaves in autumn, dogs shed their fur to prepare for temperature changes. It’s healthy. Trying to eliminate all shedding is impossible—you just want to reduce mess and keep your dog comfortable.
2. Groom Lightly, But Regularly
During shedding seasons, brushing every day or two helps a lot. Use a gentle brush, especially for short-haired dogs, and don’t overdo it—too much can irritate their skin. Think of it as a quick two-minute ritual, not a full spa day.
3. Create Easy-to-Clean Zones
Dogs tend to shed the most in areas where they relax or eat. Consider laying down a mat or cloth in their resting spot. Something that’s easy to shake out or toss into the wash is ideal. It makes cleaning up way easier, especially if you live with a vacuum-resistant couch.
4. Clothes: Not Just for Fashion
If your dog is okay with wearing clothes, a soft, breathable layer can catch a lot of loose hair before it ends up on your bed or car seat. Just make sure it fits well and doesn’t trap heat. During high-shedding days, we rotate clean pieces every day or two.
5. After Meals = Aftercare
Food areas tend to collect stray hairs fast. A simple habit like wiping down their eating area and bowl after each meal helps keep oil, crumbs, and hair from building up. We like to use something washable under the bowls to make this a one-step job.
6. For the Road: Don’t Forget the Bag
If your dog rides in a pet bag or travel carrier, the inside can trap a surprising amount of hair—especially after a walk. Choosing one that’s easy to clean inside makes life a lot easier. We like to give it a quick shake and wipe-down every few days.
Final Note
You don’t need a perfect home—you just need small, smart habits. Seasonal shedding is natural. With a few gentle routines, a couple washable tools, and a bit of patience, you’ll be back to clean(ish) floors and a happy dog in no time.
